Japan has once again proven to be a top destination for international travelers. In July, more than 3.43 million people from overseas visited the country, making it the busiest July on record.

This milestone reflects how Japan’s culture, food, and seasonal experiences continue to attract visitors from every corner of the globe. Summer holidays, new flight routes, and rising interest from neighboring countries all contributed to this surge.

Who’s Visiting Japan the Most?

Travelers from China, Taiwan, the U.S., and France were the main drivers of growth this summer.

  • China sent close to one million visitors, a jump of over 25% compared to last year.
  • Taiwan set a personal record with more than 600,000 travelers, boosted by additional flight connections.
  • From the United States, about 277,000 people came, marking their busiest July ever.
  • France and Indonesia also reached their highest numbers for the month.

Countries with Fewer Visitors

Not every region followed the upward trend. Fewer people arrived from South Korea (down about 10%) and Hong Kong, where typhoon-related flight cancellations and online earthquake rumors led to a sharp decline of nearly 37%.

Travel Isn’t One-Way

It wasn’t just inbound tourism on the rise—Japanese residents were also traveling more. Over 1.2 million people from Japan went abroad in July, about 15% more than last year.

What This Means for Foreigners in Japan

For people already living or working here, this surge in international travel is a reminder that Japan is becoming even more connected globally. More flights, more visitors, and more cultural exchange create opportunities—not just for tourism, but also for part-time jobs, language learning, and new experiences.
